On May 17, Hannah Bergbower from Newton will receive the 2019 Joyce E. Thompson Award in Women’s Health from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing for her leadership and excellence in maternal and child health.
In December 2018, Bergbower graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing with a Master of Science in Nursing as a Nurse-Midwife and Women’s Health/Gender-Related Nurse Practitioner.
Bergbower is the daughter of Wayne and Susan Bergbower of Newton. She graduated in 2008 from Newton Community High School. In 2010, she graduated from Lakeview College of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and in 2012 she graduated from Indiana University with a Master’s in Public Health. In 2016, Bergbower completed a two-year fellowship in Global Clinical Education from Massachusetts General Hospital.
She has worked domestically in rural and urban hospitals as a nurse and public health specialist; and in 2014 she worked in Tanzania, Africa, for two years with the Global Health Service Partnership as a Peace Corps Volunteer focusing on nursing and midwifery education and development.
